Trust in Aggregate: CEO of Credder Chase Palmieri on the Accountability of Online News | Episode 3 of Twist of Fate

The latest episode of A Twist of Fate: A Small Business Podcast, hosted by Douglas Younger III, features Chase Palmieri, the CEO of Credder. This burgeoning company got its stand in 2016 and formally launched in 2018 after Chase took note of how we consume online content today.

This entrepreneur started from scratch, with no connections in the cut-throat town of Silicon Valley. His success story is remarkable on a number of levels, and an inspiration for anyone who wants to take on a Goliath of their own.

Aggregate Scores and Credible Content

Credder is based on aggregates. We have aggregate scores for movies, restaurants, hotels, and retail products, but not for our news. Chase’s business is a way to hold the media accountable for what they say to the public. This has nothing to do with censorship — a principle that Chase is firmly against. His platform makes it possible for active journalists and the general public to vote on the credibility of the content.

That vote, which can be tagged with specific fallacies, is then logged into a database that is continuously updated and optimized. With enough reviews, Credder can reflect the reality behind what’s being published, and whether an article has an agenda of its own. It serves as a reminder to all aspiring entrepreneurs what a solid foundation can mean for the success of your business.

Instead of relying on advertisers, Chase relies on the accuracy that he can give to third-party websites. These sites are under increasing pressure to feature credible content, yet they face liability concerns if they choose to cherry-pick what’s promoted. With Credder, they can use the scores to give their audience a metric without having to shoulder the criticism if people stumble across incorrect or even harmful information.

Gaining Ground in Tech

As the son of two entrepreneurs, Chase has found that he can rely on his own instincts in an effort to control his own destiny. When we can’t trust the source of our news, we already know how that affects the cultural mainstream.

When challenged about the potential of gaming the system by host Douglas, Chase was the first to admit that people can be untrustworthy. (All leaders have to consider how their business might be viewed as an opportunity by scammers.) He has a built-in buffer system though, as the weight of the hundreds of other reviews tends to reveal the truth that lies beneath (e.g., one bad review can’t cancel out 100 good ones).

Chase has put his head down and created a service that we all wish we could have had long before events like the Insurrection. His vision has brought plenty of investors to the table, including the NBA’s first crowd-sourced startup competition known as Capitalize.

In this podcast, Chase opens up about his professional past, his philosophy of entrepreneurship, and how he managed to put himself on the map in Silicon Valley.
